The Thin Red Line. Few military sights are as iconic as the steady advance of Her Majesty’s line regiments, marching in disciplined formations towards the enemy — unflinching, unafraid, and resolute under fire.
If war holds any glory at all, it is found in the immaculate appearance and proud bearing of the British Army during the Crimean War. Resplendent in scarlet coats, these regiments represented both the splendour and the stark contradictions of mid-19th century warfare.
More than fifty British line regiments served in the Crimean campaign. Many of the men were no saints — some having enlisted to escape prison or poverty — yet when tested against Russian forces they fought with remarkable courage and determination.
At Alma, Sevastopol, and Inkerman, the redcoats paid a heavy price in service to Queen and country. Often described as the first modern war, the Crimean conflict was equally the last of the old-fashioned wars, with troops led by officers whose experience stretched back to Waterloo. Tragically, poor leadership, neglect, and disease claimed far more British lives than enemy fire.
