The Hail Caesar Illyrian Warriors Command set from Warlord Games represents the leaders and standard bearers of Illyrian tribal forces from the western Balkans. These command figures bring character and authority to Illyrian units on the tabletop, representing the warriors who organised and directed tribal warbands in battle.
The Illyrians were a collection of tribal peoples inhabiting regions along the Adriatic coast and across the western Balkans. Due to their proximity to the Greek world, the southern Illyrian kingdoms developed strong military traditions and many of their warriors served as mercenaries in Greek armies. This exposure to Greek warfare meant that these forces were often more organised and experienced than many other tribal armies.
Illyrian warriors are closely associated with the thureos shield, a large oval shield that is believed by some historians to have originated among Illyrian troops. The design later became widely adopted across Hellenistic armies in the form of thureophoroi infantry. Command figures such as these would have led tribal formations into battle, coordinating skirmishing troops and directing aggressive infantry tactics.
This blister pack contains detailed 28mm scale metal command miniatures suitable for leading Illyrian Warriors in Hail Caesar historical tabletop battles. These figures are ideal for representing unit leaders, officers or tribal champions within Illyrian or Balkan themed armies.
Rules and statistics for Illyrian Warriors can be found on page 43 of the Hail Caesar Army List Biblical to Early Medieval supplement and in the Southern Illyrian Kingdoms army list featured in The Pyrrhic Wars supplement.
The miniatures were sculpted by Toma Axelsson. Studio miniatures shown painted by Jamie Getliffe demonstrate the level of detail hobbyists can achieve when painting the models.
Models are supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Players searching for Warlord Games Hail Caesar Illyrian Warriors command miniatures, 28mm Illyrian leaders for ancient tabletop wargaming, or command figures for Southern Illyrian Kingdoms armies will find this set ideal for leading Illyrian forces.
