Star Wars X-Wing Core Set – Rules of Play says:

Star Wars X-Wing is a dangerous game to become invested in because the miniatures are so gorgeous and tempting! Now I’ve warned you of the danger, it’s worth playing the game because you’ll soon see that sometimes, it’s okay to give in – tactical ship-on-ship play, careful manoeuvres, unique missions… ooof! X-Wing is perfect for those wanting to get into mid-air dogfights – each player secretly picks the direction and speed their ship moves and then they can engage in combat! Choose fight or flight and still be in control! With this much to offer, it’s hard to stay away! In Star Wars X-Wing, you take the role of squad leader and command a group of merciless Imperial or daring Rebel pilots in furious ship-to-ship space combat.
